VIDEO: Handstands for Total Beginners (HSFTB) Week 2 - Shoulders
Handstands are for everyBODY, at any age, and they are just plain fun. 2020 has been a doozy so I think it’s time we all had some fun!! Here are three BIG HANDSTAND MYTHS:
Myth #1: That there’s ONE tip that unlocks the handstand! There’s no ONE way, ONE secret tip, ONE program, or ONE time period that will get you to handstanding. Beware the teacher that promises…you will ‘Learn to Handstand in 7 days!’ The only ONE thing you do need is a commitment to daily practice. Just 5-15 minutes a day. Then you are on your way.
Myth #2: You must be YOUNG to learn to handstand. You are not too old, too inflexible, or too anything to learn to handstand. It’s never too late to learn new skills. I didn’t learn until I was 50 years old. We just need to find what YOU need, whether it’s strength, mobility or a combination, and chart your course on the handstand journey. It may take 2 weeks or 2 months or 2 years, but it doesn’t matter. Forget about your friend who learned in 2 days. It takes as long as it takes. Period. The time it takes to learn to handstand has nothing to do with worth as a person (or yogi). One size does not fit all.
Myth #3: That you have to be an EXPERIENCED yogi, athlete, gymnast or acrobat to handstand. In my experience, you just need to want to learn and put in the time. We all come in different shapes and sizes. In my opinion, this is what makes the process of learning to handstand so interesting. That’s just our starting point! Remember handstanding is a journey and a life lesson, and the journey is about taking all the small steps that lead towards the bigger goal. Along the way we celebrate EVERYTHING - all the little successes.
And, I’m here for you ALL THE WAY. I’ll share my secret sauce tips (more than ONE), favorite drills and stretches and teach you how to build a handstand safely - at your own pace. It’s a life lesson and a journey)
